This is a blog about my mini life adventures as a dancer, barefoot runner, teacher, cook, and anything else I decide I want to be :)

Taiwan
Alright, I will be heading off an a SUPER adventure tomorrow. Going to Taiwan to teach, perform, conference, and tour! I'm so excited. Finally getting super nervous to travel outside the country, but should still be super exciting. I have promised myself I will continue to run there, but of course usually things like keeping up exercise don't go as planned on these kinds of trips so we'll see. Most likely I won't be updating the blog in that time, but expect to hear all kinds of exciting things when I get back. Gonna keep this post short cuz I still feel like I have so much to do before I leave!

Oakley 5k
Time: 35min 20sec
Distance: 5k
On my feet: Walmart aqua socks
Today I ran my first 5k race and did pretty good if I do say so myself. Got a really annoying cramp in my side less than a mile in I had to walk out for a while, but other than that ran pretty much the whole way and made it in only 20 seconds over my goal time. Ran it in my walmart aqua socks becaues I wasn't sure about the roads and my little blisters from the road being too hot on my Monday run. Now that I know the roads, next year I plan to do it barefoot and it shouldn't be a problem. People said I was crazy going so far for a 5k (about an hour and a half drive away) when I probably could have found one closer on the 4th of July, but I saw lots of people I knew at this one so I enjoyed it a lot.
A race starting at 7:00am and an hour and a half drive away at a place I'd never been before meant I had to get up at 4:45 this morning to be out the door by just after 5:00. Crazy, I know, but it wasn't too bad. Got up, ate breakfast, drank some water, and it all had just enough time to do a little settling before the race started. And what does the barefoot lady have for a race day breakfast? None other than leftover curry and it was delicious!!!
After the race I went over to a friend's house for some breakfast which was delicious! Then, we all went to the parade which was just like any other parade in a small town, but lots of fun and lots of salt water taffy to go around. Because, once you've run a 5k you can eat WHATEVER YOU WANT and it doesn't count because you exercised plenty... right? That's my philosophy anyway.
No noteworthy plans for the rest of my 4th of July, but I'll figure out some fun stuff to do. Probably take a nap, read, eat a burger somewhere (cuz that's American and calories don't count today and all lol.) Then find somewhere to watch the fireworks tonight (for free, because why pay when you can see the sky from somewhere free?)
Happy 4th Everyone!

Day Before
So today's the day before race day! Wahoo! Feetsies are doing a lot better than yesterday after my run when I thought my feet could defeat the heat... I was wrong. They're looking good for doing the race in aqua socks tomorrow, but not really loving the idea of standing around in my dance shoes to teach tonight.
If any of you are in Provo, come on down to center street at South Worth Hall for South Town Swing! Lessons start at 8:00 (beginning=free with dance fee, Intermediate=$2, NEW Blues=I think also $2.) I'll be helping out teach the beginning lesson so it should be a blast!
Anyway gotta go make/eat some CARBS. That's what you're supposed to do night before race day right? O ya, sure, 5K's not that far so it probably doesn't matter toooooo much, but it's a good excuse to eat some pasta with peanut sauce! :)
Will update tomorrow on how RACE DAY goes! Happy 4th of July Eve!

Ugh, Stupid Summer!
Note to self: Even in Utah it is still to hot to go barefoot running at 5:00 in the summer, especially if you plan to be walking for at least part of it!
Downfalls of the run: TO HOT! Perfect in the shady parts, and obviously not hot enough to turn home before I got half way out, but still too hot.
Good points: During a good few parts I was getting technique down enough so that mostly things didn't hurt and I was SILENT like a NINJA!
Reason I couldn't continue my awesome technique: I want to go faster, plus its nice to go faster when your feet are hot from the ground.
Interesting point of the run: The last block of my run (in the shade so the nice part) I was stopped at an intersection waiting for traffic kind of hopping from one foot to the next cuz it was hot when some guy in a car stopped to ask if I need a ride somewhere. Surely he thought I was some poor soul with not a thing to cover my soles. (hahaha, not really that fun but soul/soles, ya!) Anyway, I told him "Nah, I'm good" but in hind site what I should have said was yes... he was kinda cute, and I am a single gal ya know!
Distance: 2 mi (1.5 run/1mi walk)
Time: I stopped my stopwatch after I started mostly walking so I don't know.

Leafy Greens
Ya that's right, I like salads! And what do I have with my salad? Asperagus of course! But wait, isn't that too much green? Well then I must add some orange and yellow with my Peachie O's! :)
Well, so far today I've been pretty lazy. Really haven't felt like waking up and getting out of bed so making it to work, my hours at the museum, and the grocery store were about it for what I'm going to accomplish. I really should go on a run this evening though. Need a slow technique run today to figure out what's up with those blisters I got last week. Plus I don't want to strain myself too much before my 5k this week.
YA! My first 5k this week! Wednesday, the 4th of July, there is a 5k fun run I'm all registered for here in Utah. I heard about it about 3 weeks ago and decided I wouldn't be all trained up in time so I didn't register. But then I was thinking... right after this race I'm leaving to Taiwan for 2 weeks of awesomeness, then 4 days after I get back I have surgery, then 2 weeks after surgery I go on family vacation! I probably won't be able to do much training or race running for the rest of the summer! So I decided to sieze the day and registered for the 5k. What does that mean? It means I will most likely run a little less than half the race (seeing as I can currently go about 1.5 mi without walking.) My goal is to finish in around 35 min (my practice 5K last week was just over 36 min. but I'm hoping to be faster since it's a race and all.)
Will I be running barefoot you ask? The answer is yahno... and by that I mean I will probably run in my Walmart aqua socks. I would love to do it barefoot, but 2 things worry me.
1) I have only run as far as 2 mi barefoot (part of that walking)
2) I don't know the terrain of the race route at all (I've been told it starts and ends on gravel-like roads though and I've only been training on sidewalks so far.)
So if the roads look good I might start off barefoot, but cart my aqua socks with me. If not I'll probably start in aqua socks and if I get sick of them I'll carry them the rest of the way.
On a completely different note, tonight is Girls Night!! This means I will be eating lots and lots of delicious bite sized food (tonight's theme is Tea Party) and then heading to the theater to see Brave. (I already saw Brave last week too, very good.) Promises to be a good night with the girl friends.
Nom Nom Nom Nom (Peachie O's not pictured, they were eaten)

Back to the Blog
So, I haven't kept up with my blog for a while again, and this will be the 3rd time I revamp it into something new, but hopefully it will be something I will continue to work on this time. I have been reading Barefoot Josh's blog and have been inspired to give it a try again. I too would like to post witty bragging of my mini everyday adventures in hopes that my musings will entertain and possibly even inspire others. I have been a dancer for a long time, and I have tried a lot of different kinds of dancing and love most all of them. Dance is something I'm good at and I've come to be comfortable with, but every once in a while you have to try something new and daring. It's the spice of life.
Early this year I decided that I should start running. This "crazy" idea came for 2 reasons.
1) My dad is a runner and so I've always had this interest in running.
2) I wanted to improve my cardiovascular endurance... you know.... so I could get more awesome at dance of course.
Anyway, I started running Monday, Wednesday, and Friday every week on the treadmill in the dance training room during my free time between classes. I did great! ....... for about 3 weeks. Then I started making excuses about being tired or something and went less and less.
UNTIL, my dad started talking about this barefoot running thing. My dad is gettin OLD. Don't tell him I said that, but it's true! That being said, he's one of the most fit people I know. Anyway, back to the old part, since he's getting old he's getting more injuries and starting too creek and such. So, while he was out with a knee injury he read "Born to Run" and decided to give this barefoot thing a try. Well, once he started that's all he talked about! I would call home and every time he would tell me more about barefoot running and what it was doing to his feet and how it was helping his form and how he didn't hurt as much anymore. He kept saying that he was getting blisters on the bottom of his feet when he did things wrong and that was what hurt the worst. Once he got his form down, no more blisters, no more pain.
So I got to thinking, "Hey, I'm a contemporary/modern dancer.... I have callouses on the bottom of my feet to start with... I run barefoot everyday in dance class... short distance of course, but still, barefoot running.... it's even this ball heel thing he's talking about... why don't I give it a try?" So with a little internet research and a lot of talking to my dad I started barefoot running about end of March. I have been on and off in my training due to times when I was just way to busy to even fit in 15 min of a run and some times when I was just plain lazy, but it's working for me. Since I made the switch to barefoot running I actually enjoy it! It also doesn't hurt that there's a lot of fun in other's reactions to a barefoot runner. Almost every time I go run I pass other runners and I see the look on their face "Barefoot?! Where are your shoes? You must be LOCO!" and in my head I'm saying "Shoes?! Where are your feet? Why do you do that?"
Sometimes I feel superior to others who have made the switch to barefoot running...muahahahah :) Why, you ask? Well, there are a couple reasons.
1) It didn't take some massive injury that put me on the bench from running for me to make the switch. I just started running, thought "hey, I don't like this," heard about barefoot, and jumped right in. Most runners I've heard of making the switch only did so when they had an injury and had no other choice but to try something new until they healed.
2) I wasn't a runner before, so none of this "Well, I'm still not as fast/going as far as I was before I made the switch" stuff. Before I started barefoot running I couldn't even run a whole mile without walking for part of it, and now I'm running a mile and a half pretty easy (I've even been crazy enough to sign myself up for a 5k this week, but more on that another day.) Before barefoot running it took me about 15 min to go a mile, now I do my 1.5 mi in that 15 min. Basically, I'm WAY more awesome at this barefoot thing than the shoe thing and I'm having tons of fun doing it!
Well I suppose this has been a long enough post about my start in barefoot running and where I'm at with all that jazz now. I'll try to keep posted on how things are going.
